Onthulling 2: het beest
Lijkt ie een beetje op het beest uit de tekst?
1Toen zag ik een beest uit de zee komen. Het beest had zeven koppen en tien hoorns. Op elke hoorn had het een kroon, en op elke kop stond een naam die alleen voor God gebruikt mag worden. 2Het beest leek op een panter, maar het had de poten van een beer en de tanden van een leeuw. Aan dat beest gaf de draak zijn kracht en zijn koninklijke macht.
Het beest is een mix van een panter, een beer en een leeuw. Het komt uit het boek Daniël.
Daniël 7
1Toen Belsassar één jaar koning van Babylonië was, kreeg Daniël een droom. Hij zag allerlei dingen in zijn slaap. Daarna schreef hij op wat hij gedroomd had. Dit is zijn verslag:
2‘Vannacht had ik een droom. Ik zag een grote zee. De wind kwam van alle kanten en maakte hoge golven. 3Toen kwamen er vier grote dieren uit de zee. Ze leken niet op elkaar.
4Het eerste dier leek op een leeuw. Maar het had vleugels, net als een adelaar. Ik zag dat de vleugels van het dier uitgetrokken werden. Daarna werd het dier opgepakt en rechtop gezet. Toen stond het op twee benen, net als een mens. En het ging ook denken als een mens.
5Het tweede dier leek op een beer. Het stond half rechtop. Het had drie botten in zijn bek. Iemand zei tegen dat dier: ‘Sta op en eet zo veel als je pakken kunt.’
6Het derde dier leek op een panter. Maar het had vier vleugels op zijn rug. En het had vier koppen. Dat dier kreeg veel macht.
7Daarna zag ik het vierde dier.
Bij Daniël staan die vier beesten voor grote machtige landen die Israël hebben veroverd: Babylon, Perzië, Grieken van Alexander de Grote, en als laatste Rome. In Openbaring is dat tot één beest gemixt. Dat is dus het beest van de grote machtige landen. Die geweld gebruiken en de mensen in de landen onderdrukken. En de veroverde volken onderdrukken.
Wat betekent dat voor nu? Syrië, waar één iemand Assad de baas wil blijven, en miljoenen mensen op de vlucht zijn geslagen. Wit-Rusland: haalt vluchtelingen op uit andere landen, en zet ze over de grens naar Polen. Macht is belangrijker dan mensen. Of dichter bij huis: toeslagenaffaire. Mensen werden niet vertrouwd. Tweede beest:
11Toen zag ik nog een beest. Dat beest kwam uit de aarde. Iedereen kreeg zo’n teken: jong en oud, rijk en arm, slaven en vrije mensen. 17Alleen mensen met dat teken mochten nog dingen kopen of verkopen.
Beest van rijkdom, economie/geld boven schepping en mensen. Dat herkennen wij wel. Wij vereren economische groei, zoeken zekerheid in geld. Gevolgen: klimaatprobleem, slavernij, onrecht
Deze twee beesten willen dat we ze aanbidden. Ze zijn groter dan menselijke problemen. Achter die beesten zit de draak, de duivel, de satan, de personificatie van het kwaad. Ze willen dat we hen belangrijker vinden dan God. Dan gaat de wereld die God zo mooi heeft gemaakt en de mensen kapot.
Maar Openbaring heeft goed nieuws. Er wordt nog een dier onthuld.
Een lam.
Het lam verslaat de draak en de beesten. Hoe? Niet door geweld, niet door nog rijker te worden dan het beest. Maar door zich op te offeren. Jezus is het lam van God. Toen Hij stierf aan het kruis, is de wereld op z’n kop gezet. Of eigenlijk weer recht gezet. Door Jezus worden we vergeven. Kunnen we weer bij God horen. Bevrijdt God ons uit de macht van de draak. Door de Geest van Jezus, de Heilige Geest, kunnen we meewerken aan het goede. Nu al meebouwen aan Gods Koninkrijk op aarde.
Dat gaat nu nog niet helemaal lukken. Erg blijven beestachtige dingen gebeuren. Tot het eind. Als het lam komt als Koning op deze aarde. Dan verdwijnen de draak en zijn beesten in het vuur. Dan komt er echte vrede.
Goede nieuws van Openbaring is: Jezus heeft ze de beesten overwonnen, als een geslacht lam.

Nero: slechte Keizer die bijvoorbeeld zelf een wijk in Rome in brand liet steken omdat hij daar een paleis wilde bouwen. Maar hij gaf de schuld aan de christenen en liet ze doden (ook Petrus en Paulus).
Liet zichzelf als God aanbidden.
In de tijd van Johannes ging er een verhaal rond dat Nero uit de dood zou opstaan terug zou keren naar de aarde (wederkomst).
Nero als tegen Jezus. Als anti-christ.
Dat heeft ook te maken met dat teken van het beest op je rechterhand of je voorhoofd.
Deuteronomium 6
4Mozes zei verder: ‘Volk van Israël, luister goed. De Heer, onze God, is de enige God! 5Houd van hem met je hele hart, met je hele ziel, en met al je kracht.
6Vandaag zal ik jullie de regels van de Heer geven. Onthoud ze goed, vergeet ze niet! 7Zorg ervoor dat jullie kinderen ze goed leren. Blijf ze herhalen, thuis en onderweg, als je naar bed gaat en als je weer opstaat.

Het gaat om vasthouden aan wat echt waar is. Dat hemelse perspectief vanuit de toekomst. Jezus heeft gewonnen van het beest. Blijf volhouden, wat er ook gebeurd. Ga niet allerlei tekenen in Openbaring toepassen op nu, zo is Openbaring niet geschreven. Het is geen kalender, maar een verzetsboek. Maar de hoofdboodschap van Openbaring geldt nog altijd: Jezus is het lam dat geslacht is en zo de tegenstander heeft verslagen. Blijf daarin geloven en blijf daarop vertrouwen. Amen.

Then the world that God has made so beautiful and the people are destroyed. But Revelation has good news. Another animal is revealed. A lamb. The lamb slays the dragon and the beasts. How? Not by force, not by getting richer than the beast. But by sacrificing oneself. Jesus is the lamb of God. When He died on the cross, the world was turned upside down. Or actually put it right. We are forgiven through Jesus. Can we belong to God again? God deliver us from the power of the dragon. Through the Spirit of Jesus, the Holy Spirit, we can cooperate for good.
