Leerlingen van Jezus, gasten met ons,
Welke gebod komt het vaakst voor in de Bijbel?
Wees niet bang. Zo’n 400 keer staat het geschreven.
En als iets zo vaak in de Bijbel genoemd wordt, betekent dat dat het heel belangrijk is. Maar het betekent ook iets anders. Want wat betekent het als je moeder je voor de tiende keer gebied: ruim je kamer nou eens op! Precies. Dat betekent dat je niet hebt geluisterd. Dus als ‘wees niet bang’ 400 keer in de Bijbel staat, dan is dat omdat wij het heel moeilijk vinden om daar ook naar te luisteren.
Maar in dit gedeelte zegt Jezus ergens ook dat we moeten oppassen: pas op voor de mensen, ik zend jullie als schapen onder de wolven. Als je een schaap bent dan kun je maar beter bang zijn voor wolven.
En waar waarschuwt Jezus voor? Voor vervolging. Jezus zendt zijn 12 apostelen uit, en daarmee de hele kerk die na hen komt. En Jezus weet dat zijn leerlingen zullen worden vervolgd. En dat is zo gebeurd. De meeste van die 12 zijn door geweld om het leven gekomen, en vele na hen in de eerste eeuwen na Christus. En nog steeds gaat het zo. In Nigeria komen jaarlijks 5000 christenen om door geweld van Boko Haram.
Het zijn onze zussen en broers die dat overkomt. Maar voor ons is het erg ver weg.
Als ik ergens niet bang voor ben, dan is het wel dat wij in Nederland ooit vanwege het geloof worden vervolgt. In Nederland mag iedereen zijn eigen waarheid hebben. En je kunt van alles vinden van woke, maar het zorgt er ook voor dat er respect is voor kleine minderheden, zoals christenen in Nederland nu zijn.
En er zijn nog maar weinig mensen allergisch voor het christelijk geloof. Veel mensen zijn er ook niet nieuwsgierig naar. Ze zijn apatheistisch: apatisch over geloof. Het boeit ze niet, het raakt ze niet, ze weten er niks van. Ze zijn voor christenen volstrekt ongevaarlijk.
We hoeven niet bang te zijn voor vervolging in Nederland. Er is niemand die ons iets aan zou willen doen omdat we volgelingen zijn van Jezus.
En toch zijn de woorden van Jezus super belangrijk voor ons. Want Jezus waarschuwt ons voor mensen, maar wijst ons op een nog groter gevaar: wees niet bang voor mensen die je lichaam kan doden, maar wees bang voor degene die je ziel kan doden.
Onze ziel is in gevaar. En dan niet omdat we veroordeelt worden tot de hel en onze ziel daar voor eeuwig moet blijven branden. Dat is geen beeld uit de Bijbel, maar uit de Griekse mythologie. Jezus waarschuwt ons voor machten en krachten die onze ziel beschadigen en vernietigen.
En dat gevaar is super reëel. Ook voor ons in deze tijd. Als wij schapen zijn, dan is het gevaar niet dat de wolven ons willen opeten. De wolven zijn hun interesse in schapen verloren. Ze zijn veel te druk om zich met ons bezig te houden. En ze zijn veel te vatsig om nog de moeite te doen om achter een schaap aan te rennen.
Onze ziel wordt verdoofd door druk zijn en door welvaart. Dat is het gevaar dat op de loer ligt. Onze ziel die van nature snakt naar God, wordt afgestompt. We hebben geen rust in ons leven, staan altijd maar aan. Terwijl God zo vaak tot ons komt in de stilte, in het luisteren, in verwondering, in het nu. Maar we zijn vaak te druk met het verleden en met de toekomst om nu dicht bij God te kunnen zijn.
En onze ziel verlangt naar meer. Meer spullen, meer geld, meer zekerheid, meer prestaties, meer hartjes, meer uitdaging. Terwijl God te vinden is in het genoeg. In het delen, in het genieten, in het leven in het nu.
De machten en krachten van het kwaad gebruiken geen wolven om ons bang te maken. In onze leefwereld is een sluwere methode veel effectiever. Met de sluwheid van een slang worden we verleid om onze ziel bij God vandaan te houden.
Jezus roept ons op om op te passen voor de wolven. En Hij roept ons op om de slang te evenaren in sluwheid. Om de methoden van de slang te kennen en ons daar tegen te wapenen. Om de macht van drukte,geld en goed niet te laten heersen over ons leven. Om de onschuld van een duif te behouden. Om dicht bij God te blijven.
Hoe doe je dat, leven met je ziel gericht op God? Daarvoor geeft Jezus praktische aanwijzingen.
Vertrouw op de Geest van jullie Vader, zegt Jezus. De Geest die je woorden in je mond legt als je wordt vervolgd en moet verantwoorden waarom je Jezus volgt. Diezelfde Geest van de Vader werkt in ons. Geef die Geest de ruimte om in je te spreken. Door stil te worden, door samen te zingen, door rust te maken in je leven, door God te zoeken in de natuur, door God te zoeken op jouw manier.
Een tweede is: blijf Jezus volgen. Hij is onze leermeester, wij zijn Zijn dienaren, Hij is de Heer van ons huis. Volg Hem na. Ook Jezus werd voortdurend verleid om zonder God te leven. Ook Hij moest zich inspannen om dicht bij God te blijven. Jezus zegt: mijn tegenstanders schelden mij uit voor Beëlzebub. De heer van het huis van het kwaad. Voor duivel. Ga er maar vanuit dat jullie voor hetzelfde worden uitgemaakt als jullie mij volgen. Hoe mensen spreken over Jezus, zo zullen ze ook spreken over zijn leerlingen.
Het interessante is dat veel mensen tegenwoordig wel een heel positief beeld hebben van Jezus. De kerk wordt niet vertrouwd, over christenen zijn nog wel eens vooroordelen, maar Jezus: veel mensen zien Hem als een inspirerend mens, een groot spiritueel leider. Wat als wij het volgen van Jezus echt serieus nemen. Zouden mensen ons dan ook positief gaan zien? Onze goede daden zien en de Vader in de hemel alle eer geven?
En kom daar maar voor uit. Tijdens Jezus’ leven moest het lange tijd in het verborgene gebeuren. Al vanaf het begin van zijn leven en missie werd Jezus bedreigd. Daarom moest Hij in het verborgene zijn werk doen, zorgen dat er niet te veel aandacht op Hem werd gericht.
Maar vanaf Pasen wordt het Evangelie verkondigt in het licht. Kom maar uit voor je geloof! Het mag er zijn, juist ook in onze tijd waarin de meeste mensen om ons heen van niks weten. Er zit zo veel schroom op ons om van ons geloof te getuigen. Ik merk het ook bij mezelf hoor. Ik moet ook altijd over een drempel heen om God ter sprake te brengen. Hier op de kansel lukt het wel, of in een pastoraal gesprek. Maar buiten die veilige bekende setting moet ik echt over mijn eigen angst heenstappen.
Wij zijn zo getraind om geloven voor onszelf te houden. Alsof het iets is voor in het kerkgebouw of achter de voordeur. Maar dat is echt onzin. Geloof is voor het hele leven, juist ook voor op je werk, voor in de klas, voor op een verjaardag. Grijp toch die kansen die God geeft, in plaats van al die twijfels of mensen er wel op zitten te wachten. Neem je eigen twijfels en angsten niet zo serieus.
En dat alles komt bij elkaar in dat gebod dat zo vaak in de Bijbel staat: wees niet bang. Wat kost een paar mussen? Bijna niks. Een paar mussen is zeg maar de frikandel van de oudheid. Mussen waren er meer dan genoeg, ze waren makkelijk te vangen. Dus op de markt kon je voor weinig een mus als snack kopen als snelle hap. Ze kosten niks zegt Jezus, en toch zorgt jullie Vader in de hemel ook voor de mussen.
Al jullie haren op je hoofd zijn geteld. Gods liefde voor ons is zo groot. Als Hij de haren op je hoofd al kent, hoeveel te meer zorgt Hij dan voor ons lichaam en hoeveel te meer wil Hij contact met onze ziel.
We zijn kostbaar in Zijn ogen. Wees niet bang hoe mensen over je denken. Volg Jezus, durf je geloof te belijden, pas op voor drukte en welvaart, die je ziel bij God willen houden. Dan zul je het leven met Jezus in al zijn volheid ontvangen. Amen.

Which commandment occurs most often in the Bible?
Do not be afraid. It is written about 400 times.
And when something is mentioned so many times in the Bible, it means that it is very important. But it also means something else. Because what does it mean when your mother commands you for the tenth time: tidy up your room! Precisely. That means you haven’t listened. So if “don’t be afraid” is in the Bible 400 times, it’s because we find it very hard to listen to it.
But somewhere in this passage Jesus also tells us to beware: Beware of men, I am sending you as sheep among wolves. If you’re a sheep, you better be afraid of wolves.
And what does Jesus warn about? For prosecution. Jesus sends out his 12 apostles, and with them the entire church that comes after them. And Jesus knows that his disciples will be persecuted. And that’s how it happened. Most of those 12 were killed by violence, and many after them in the early centuries AD. And it still goes like this. Boko Haram kills 5,000 Christians every year in Nigeria.
It is our sisters and brothers who are affected. But for us it is very far away.
If there’s one thing I’m not afraid of, it’s that we in the Netherlands will one day be persecuted because of our faith. In the Netherlands everyone is allowed to have their own truth. And you can find anything about woke, but it also ensures that there is respect for small minorities, such as Christians in the Netherlands now.
And few people are still allergic to the Christian faith. Many people are not curious about it either. They are apathetic: apathetic about faith. They don’t care, it doesn’t affect them, they don’t know anything about it. They are completely harmless to Christians.
We need not fear persecution in the Netherlands. There is no one who would want to harm us because we are followers of Jesus.
And yet the words of Jesus are super important to us. For Jesus warns us about people, but points out an even greater danger: do not be afraid of people whom your body can kill, but be afraid of the one who can kill your soul.
Our soul is in danger. And not because we are condemned to hell and our souls must burn there forever. That is not an image from the Bible, but from Greek mythology. Jesus warns us about powers and forces that damage and destroy our souls.
And that danger is very real. Also for us during this time. If we are sheep, then the danger is not that the wolves want to eat us. The wolves have lost interest in sheep. They are far too busy to deal with us. And they are far too quick to even bother running after a sheep.
Our souls are numbed by busyness and prosperity. That is the danger lurking. Our soul, which naturally yearns for God, becomes dull. We have no rest in our lives, we are always on. While God so often comes to us in silence, in listening, in wonder, in the now. But we are often too busy with the past and the future to be close to God now.
And our soul longs for more. More stuff, more money, more security, more achievements, more hearts, more challenge. While God can be found in enough. In sharing, in enjoying, in living in the now.
The powers and forces of evil do not use wolves to frighten us. In our environment, a more cunning method is much more effective. With the cunning of a serpent we are tempted to keep our souls away from God.
Jesus calls us to beware of the wolves. And He calls us to equal the serpent in cunning. To know the methods of the serpent and to arm ourselves against them. To not let the power of busyness, money and goods rule over our lives. To preserve the innocence of a dove. To stay close to God.
How do you do that, living with your soul focused on God? Jesus gives practical instructions for this.
Trust in the Spirit of your Father, says Jesus. The Spirit who puts words in your mouth when you are persecuted and has to answer why you follow Jesus. That same Spirit of the Father works in us. Allow that Spirit to speak in you. By becoming silent, by singing together, by creating peace in your life, by seeking God in nature, by seeking God in your own way.
A second is: keep following Jesus. He is our teacher, we are His servants, He is the Lord of our house. Follow Him. Jesus too was constantly tempted to live without God. He too had to make an effort to stay close to God. Jesus says: My adversaries call me Beelzebub. The lord of the house of evil. For devil. Just assume you’ll be labeled the same if you follow me. As people speak of Jesus, they will also speak of his students.
The interesting thing is that many people today have a very positive view of Jesus. The church is not trusted, there are sometimes prejudices about Christians, but Jesus: many people see Him as an inspiring person, a great spiritual leader. What if we really take following Jesus seriously. Would people also see us positively? See our good deeds and give the Father in heaven all the glory?
And come up with that. It had to be done in secret for a long time during Jesus’ life. From the very beginning of his life and mission, Jesus was threatened. Therefore, He had to do His work in secret, so that not too much attention was focused on Him.
But from Easter the Gospel is proclaimed in the light. Stand up for your faith! It may be there, especially in our time when most people around us know nothing. We are so timid about testifying to our faith. I notice it in myself too. I also always have to cross a threshold to bring up God. It will work here in the pulpit, or in a pastoral conversation. But beyond that safe familiar setting, I really need to get over my own fear.
We are so trained to keep beliefs to ourselves. As if it is something for the church building or behind the front door. But that’s really nonsense. Faith is for life, especially for work, for class, for a birthday. Grab those opportunities that God gives, instead of all those doubts whether people are waiting for them. Don’t take your own doubts and fears so seriously.
And it all comes together in that commandment that is so often in the Bible: do not be afraid. How much does a pair of sparrows cost? Almost nothing. A few sparrows is, say, the frikandel of antiquity. There were more than enough sparrows, they were easy to catch. So on the market you could buy a sparrow as a snack for little as a quick bite. They cost nothing, says Jesus, and yet your Father in heaven also takes care of the sparrows.
All your hairs on your head are counted. God’s love for us is so great. If He already knows the hairs on your head, how much more does He care for our bodies and how much more does He want contact with our souls.
We are precious in His eyes. Don’t be afraid of what people think of you. Follow Jesus, dare to profess your faith, beware of bustle and prosperity, which want to keep your soul with God. Then you will receive life with Jesus in all its fullness. Amen.
