bij Johannes 20:1-18, sermon in English below
Leerlingen van de meester, gasten met ons,
Het is zondag. De eerste dag van de nieuwe week. Het is vroeg in de ochtend. De avondklok is net afgelopenen. De eerste zonnestralen raken de aarde.
Daar loopt een vrouw. Maria. Ze kijkt naar beneden. Ze is verdrietig. Ze is alleen. Ze loopt naar het graf van Jezus. Er ligt een grote steen tussen haar en Jezus. Want Jezus is dood. Hij ligt in een graf. Het enige wat Maria nog kan doen is huilen bij die grote zware steen.
Maar kijk! De steen is weg. Huh? Wat is er gebeurd?
Maria rent weg. Vlug gaat ze naar Petrus en de andere leerlingen van Jezus. Hijgent zegt ze: Ze hebben Jezus weggehaald uit het graf! En we weten niet waar zijn lichaam nu is!
En nu rennen Petrus en Johannes er vandoor. Johannes rent het snelst. Hijgend kijkt hij om het hoekje van het rotsgraf, en hij ziet: doeken. Petrus komt ook aan. Hij doet een stap het graf in. Hij ziet de doeken: een stapeltje doeken bij het voeteneind. Een de gezichtsdoek bij het hoofdeind.
Nu stapt ook Johannes naar binnen. Hij ziet de doeken zo netjes liggen. En Hij ziet al meer: hij gelooft wat hij ziet. Dat Jezus is opgestaan uit de dood! Hij ziet het wel, gelooft het, maar begrijpt er nog niks van.
En ze rennen snel terug naar de andere leerlingen.
Bij het graf staat nog Maria. Zij was al een keer naar de leerlingen gerent, dus ze kon niet zo hard meer rennen naar het graf toe. Ze hijgt. Ze huilt. Ze kijkt door haar tranen heen in het graf.
Wat ziet ze? Doeken, ja. Maar nog meer. Engelen: één bij het hoofdeind, één bij het voeteneind.
Ze vragen: waarom huil je?
Mijn Heer is weggehaald, ik weet niet waar Hij is
Maria draait zich om. Het graf is zo leeg, ze kan het niet verdragen. Daar staat opeens nog iemand. Hij stelt dezelfde vraag: waarom huil je?
Maria denkt dat het de tuinman is. En klopt dat?
….
Ja, dat klopt. Dit is de tuinman. De tuinman uit het begin van de Bijbel. De tuinman die aan het werk mocht in de tuin van Eden.
Genesis 2
15God, de Heer, had de mens dus naar de tuin van Eden gebracht. De mens moest voor de tuin zorgen en erop passen.
Dus God heeft een tuin aangelegd. En de mensen zijn tuinmannen en tuinvrouwen die voor de tuin moeten zorgen en er op moeten passen.
Nou. Dat is niet zo goed gelukt. De Bijbel vertelt dat de mensen deze macht over elkaar, over de dieren, over de schepping hebben misbruikt. Ze hebben elkaar onrecht aangedaan, ze hebben de schoonheid van de schepping verstoort met lelijkheid, ze hebben liefde misbruikt, de schepping aanbeden in plaats van de schepper, van hun vrijheid een chaos gemaakt, de waarheid geweld aangedaan. Dat tuinieren is helemaal mislukt. Gods tuin is een dode plaats geworden.
En dat is waarom God zelf heeft ingegrepen. Hij is mens geworden, hij is zelf tuinman geworden in Jezus. Waar Jezus was werd de tuin weer mooi: daar kwam recht, liefde, schoonheid, aanbidding naar God toe, gingen mensen elkaar dienen, werden mensen weer vrij, werden de leugens van duivel verbroken.
Maar al die goedheid was meer dan de mensen konden verdragen. Daarom hebben ze Jezus aan het kruis geslagen.
Maar daarmee heeft Jezus juist gewonnen! Het kruis werd een troon. Om het met tuinbeelden te zeggen: aan het kruis heeft Jezus het onkruid, de zonde, gewied, en het ongedierte, de boze, verdelgt.
En nu staat Jezus hier, voor Maria. De tuinman. De mens zoals God mensen bedoelt heeft. Om te zorgen voor de schepping en er op te passen. Op de achtste dag. De eerste dag van Gods nieuwe schepping.
God roept ons in die nieuwe schepping. Adam, waar ben je? Waarom huil je?
Maria ziet niet wie Jezus is. Tot haar naam klinkt: Maria.
Rabouni! Meester!
En zo roept God ons allemaal. Kom! Ga mee Gods nieuwe schepping in! Stop met je pogingen om het kwaad zelf uit te wissen. Stop met gifspuiten, met schoffelen, met het doen op eigen kracht.
Geloof in Jezus als je meester. In God als je Vader. Jezus gaat naar de Vader, en geeft ons zijn Heilige Geest. Daarmee kun je weer tuinman en tuinvrouw worden zoals je bedoelt bent!
Kom uit je graf. Kijk met nieuwe ogen! Jezus is niet hier, Hij is opgestaan! Vertel het iedereen. De nieuwe schepping is begonnen. Jezus is opgestaan. Halleluja. Amen.

It is Sunday. The first day of the new week. It’s early in the morning. Curfew has just ended. The first rays of the sun hit the earth.
There is a woman walking. Maria. She looks down. She is sad. She’s alone. She walks to the tomb of Jesus. There is a large stone between her and Jesus. Because Jesus is dead. He’s in a grave. The only thing Mary can do is cry by that big heavy stone.
But look! The stone is gone. Huh? What happened?
Maria runs away. She quickly goes to Peter and the other disciples of Jesus. Hijgent she says: They have taken Jesus from the grave! And we don’t know where his body is now!
And now Peter and John are running off. Johannes is running the fastest. Panting he looks around the corner of the rock tomb, and he sees: cloths. Peter also arrives. He takes a step into the grave. He sees the canvases: a pile of canvases at the foot of the bed. A face cloth at the head end.
Now Johannes also steps inside. He sees the cloths lying so neatly. And He sees more: he believes what he sees. That Jesus has risen from the dead! He sees it, believes it, but doesn’t understand anything yet.
And they quickly run back to the other students.
Mary is still standing at the tomb. She had already run to the students once, so she couldn’t run that fast to the grave anymore. She’s panting. She is crying. She looks through her tears into the grave.
What does she see? Cloths, yes. But even more. Angels: one at the head end, one at the foot end.
They ask: why are you crying?
My Lord has been taken away, I don’t know where He is
Maria turns around. The grave is so empty she can’t bear it. Suddenly someone else is standing there. He asks the same question: why are you crying?
Maria thinks it is the gardener. And is that correct?
….
Yes that’s right. This is the gardener. The gardener from the beginning of the Bible. The gardener who was allowed to work in the garden of Eden.
Genesis 2
15 So God the Lord had brought man into the garden of Eden. Man had to take care of the garden and look after it.
So God has planted a garden. And the people are gardeners and gardeners who have to take care of the garden and take care of it.
Well. That did not work out very well. The Bible tells us that people have abused this power over each other, over the animals, over creation. They have wronged each other, they have disturbed the beauty of creation with ugliness, they have abused love, worshiped creation instead of the creator, made chaos of their freedom, violated the truth. That gardening has completely failed. God’s garden has become a dead place.
And that’s why God Himself intervened. He became man, he himself became a gardener in Jesus. Where Jesus was the garden became beautiful again: there justice came, love, beauty, worship to God, people began to serve each other, people were set free again, the lies of the devil were broken.
But all that goodness was more than the people could bear. That is why they crucified Jesus.
But with that, Jesus has won! The cross became a throne. To put it with garden statues: on the cross Jesus weeded the tares, the sin, and the vermin, the evil one.
And now Jesus is standing here, before Mary. The gardener. Man as God intended people. To take care of creation and take care of it. On the eighth day. The first day of God’s new creation.
God is calling us into that new creation. Adam, where are you? Why are you crying?
Mary does not see who Jesus is. Until her name sounds: Maria.
Rabouni! Master!
And so God calls us all. Come on! Enter into God’s new creation! Stop trying to erase evil yourself. Stop spraying poison, hoeing, doing it on your own.
Believe in Jesus as your master. In God as your Father. Jesus goes to the Father and gives us his Holy Spirit. With that you can become a gardener and gardener again as you intended!
Come out of your grave. Watch with new eyes! Jesus is not here, He is risen! Tell everyone. The new creation has begun. Jesus has risen. Hallelujah. Amen.
