Leerlingen van Jezus, gasten met ons.
Laten we beginnen met een lekker nummer
Bouw uw koninkrijk
Zet het kwaad te kijk
Toon uw sterke hand
Wat zitten jullie daar stil. Oh, jullie horen niks. Heb ik niks doorgestuurd, over die silent disco aan het begin van de preek? Nou ja, dat krijg je met slaapgebrek.
Ik stel voor dat we na de preek het lied ‘Bouw uw koninkrijk’ staand deels luisteren en deels zingen. En dan mag er gedanst wordten.
Want de laatste bede van het Onze Vader is als een silent disco. Dansmuziek die je alleen hoort als je op God bent afgestemd.
Want van U is het koninkrijk, de kracht en de heerlijkheid, in eeuwigheid, amen.
Dat is als een silent disco. Deze laatste bede is een lofprijzing. Het helpt ons om voor de feiten uit te leven. Het feit is dat Gods Koninkrijk is begonnen met Jezus. De macht en majesteit behoren God toe, voor altijd. Dat zijn de feiten.
Maar het Koninkrijk is nog niet voltooid. Gods heerschappij is begonnen, maar nog niet compleet.
Maar de muziek van Gods nieuwe wereld klinkt al. En wij mogen daar nu al vanuit leven. Voor de feiten uit leven.
Deze laatste bede is een lofprijzing. We geven God de lof, de eer, die Hem nu al toekomt. En God eren, dat is waartoe wij geroepen zijn.
Psalm 8 laat heel mooi zien hoe dat werkt. Het begint en eindigt met een lofzang op God.
God is koning. Zijn naam is groot en machtig. Zijn glorie is ontzagwekkend. Hij is de Schepper van alles en heeft alles prachtig gemaakt. Glorieuze fantastische hemellichamen zoals de zon, de maan en sterrenpracht.
En die God. Groot en geweldig. Heeft er voor gekozen om door mensen heen te werken. Door weerloze, kwetsbare, modderfiguren. Hij heeft ons uit klei geboetseerd, zijn adem ingeblazen. Voor een glorieuze roeping. Om in Gods naam te regeren over de hele schepping. Om Gods beeld te zijn op aarde. En de schepping te beheren.
En dat kunnen we alleen als we God de eer geven. Want: een belangrijke geestelijke les over lofprijzing is dat je gaat lijken op wat je vereert.
Ieder mens vereert wel iets. Wij zijn gemaakt om God de eer te geven. Als we zo leven gaan we steeds meer mens worden. Maar vaak vereren we andere dingen uit de schepping. We maken goede dingen te belangrijk. We maken er afgoden van die we vereren.
Wat zijn jouw afgoden? Je kunt het ontdekken als je kijkt naar je agenda, je portemonnee, en je zorgen.
Je agenda. Waar gaat jouw tijd naar toe? En dan bedoel ik vooral de tijd die niet in je agenda staat.
Zit je avond aan avond te blokken op je studie? Misschien dat je prestaties dan te belangrijk vindt.
Werk je tot 5 uur, maar wordt het regelmatig half 7? Ben je dan niet je gezin aan het offeren op het altaar van je werk?
En wat doe je als je ’s avonds op de bank zit? Hoeveel tijd ben je nog bezig met je telefoon? Met het checken van je likes? Waarom is dat voor jou zo belangrijk? Wordt je er echt gelukkiger van? Wat doet het met je als de likes tegenvallen?
En je portemonee? Wat doet geld met je? Waar geef je veel aan uit? Klopt dat met wat je eigenlijk wilt? Heb je dat grotere huis echt nodig? Hoeveel zekerheid haal je uit wat er op je bankrekening staat? Is geld iets om van te delen, of om op te bouwen?
En je zorgen. Waar gaan je gedachten telkens weer heen? Kun je leven met je kwetsbaarheid, met een gezondheid die niet perfect is? Kun je afhankelijk zijn van anderen? Durf je los te laten? Te vertrouwen op God?
Afgoden beloven je van alles, maar ze nemen meer dan ze je geven. En al het goede in de schepping kan tot een afgod worden. Het zijn dingen die op zich goed zijn, maar als je ze te veel eer geeft, gaan ze je verzwakken. Ze maken weer een modderfiguur van je.
Alleen God vereren maakt ons tot vrije mensen. Elke keer dat we deze bede uit het Onze Vader bidden worden we daaraan herinnert.
Het gaat om Gods koninkrijk, Gods macht en glorie. Daar mogen wij uit leven. Daar kunnen wij in delen.
Het alternatief is dat het gaat om ons koninkrijk, onze macht, en onze glorie.
Dat geldt voor ons individueel, maar ook voor ons samen. Als kerk. Als maatschappij. Als cultuur.
Kijk maar eens naar de tijd van Jezus. Van wie was in zijn tijd het koninkrijk, de macht en de glorie?
Van keizer Octavianus. We kennen hem als Augustus, de verhevene. Het ging om het imperium romanum, de heerschappij van de Romeinen. Het ging om de glorie van Rome.
Bidden dat het gaat om Gods heerschappij, zijn macht en zijn majesteit. Dat was in Jezus’s tijd een daad van verzet. Verzet tegen een dictatuur gebouwd op legioenen, kolonialisme, uitbuiting en slavernij.
En ook in onze tijd is dit gebed een daad van verzet. Verzet tegen de afgoden. Tegen het onrecht dat zij voortbrengen, tegen de hebzucht van aandeelhouders, racisme tussen volken, tegen uitbuiting van de schepping. Door God te eren, verzetten we ons tegen het kwaad. We geven God de ultieme eer, en niets en niemand anders in de schepping.
Door het Onze Vader te bidden, en vooral de laatste regel, leven we vooruit op de feiten. Het lijkt hier op aarde te draaien om het koninkrijk van de economische groei, de macht van de multinationals, of de glorie van onze eigen prestaties.
Maar dat alles is schijn. Wij weten beter. Wij verwachten Gods Koninkrijk. Wij leven nu al vanuit zijn kracht. Wij geloven dat ooit heel de aarde vol wordt van zijn glorie. En daarom gaan we nu al als vrije mensen door het leven. Dansend op de muziek van Gods Nieuwe wereld. Amen.

How quiet are you there? Oh, you don’t hear anything. Didn’t I forward anything about that silent disco at the beginning of the sermon? Well, that’s what you get with sleep deprivation.
I suggest that after the sermon we hear part of the song “Build Your Kingdom” while standing and part singing. And then you can dance.
For the last prayer of the Lord’s Prayer is like a silent disco. Dance music that you only hear when you are attuned to God.
For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory forever, amen.
That’s like a silent disco. This last petition is a praise. It helps us live out the facts. The fact is that God’s Kingdom began with Jesus. The power and majesty belong to God, forever. Those are the facts.
But the kingdom is not yet complete. God ’s reign has begun, but is not yet complete.
But the music of God’s new world is already sounding. And we can already live from that. For the facts from life .
This last petition is a praise. We give God the praise, the honor, which is already due to Him. And honoring God, that’s what we’re called to do.
Psalm 8 shows very nicely how this works. It begins and ends with a song of praise to God.
God is king. His name is great and mighty. His glory is awe-inspiring. He is the Creator of everything and has made everything beautiful. Glorious fantastic celestial bodies such as the sun, moon and stellar splendor.
And that God. Big and great. Has chosen to work through people. By defenseless, vulnerable, mud figures . He has molded us out of clay , breathed in. For a glorious calling. To rule in God’s name over all creation. To be God’s image on earth. And to manage creation.
And we can only do that if we give God the glory. Because an important spiritual lesson about praise is that you become like what you worship .
Everyone worships something. W ij are made to give glory to God. If we live like this, we will become more and more human. But often we worship other things from creation. We make good things too important. We make idols of them that we worship.
What are your idols? You can discover it if you look at your calendar, your wallet , and your worries.
Your calendar. Where is your time going? And I mainly mean the time that is not in your agenda.
Are you studying your studies night after night? Maybe you think performance is too important.
Do you work until 5 o’clock, but does it regularly become half past seven? Are you not sacrificing your family on the altar of your work?
And what do you do when you sit on the couch in the evening ? How much time do you spend on your phone? By checking your likes ? Why is that so important to you? Does it really make you happier? What does it do to you when the likes are disappointing?
And your wallet ? What does money do to you? What do you spend a lot on? Does that match what you actually want? Do you really need that bigger house? How much security do you get from what is in your bank account? Is money something to share or build on?
And your worries. Where do your thoughts keep going? Can you live with your vulnerability, with a health that is not perfect? Can you depend on others? Do you dare to let go? To trust in God?
Idols promise you everything, but they take more than they give you. And everything good in creation can become an idol. They are good things in and of themselves, but if you give them too much credit, they will weaken you. They make you a mud figure again.
Worshiping God alone makes us free people. We are reminded of this every time we pray this prayer from the Our Father.
It is about God’s kingdom, God’s power and glory. We can live out of that. We can share in that.
The alternative is that it is about our kingdom, our power, and our glory.
This applies to us individually, but also to us together. As church. As a society. As culture.
Just look at the time of Jesus. Who was in z ijn time the kingdom, the power and the glory?
of Emperor Octavian. We know him as Aug u stus, the Exalted. It was about the imperium romanum , the rule of the Roman and . It was about the glory of Rome.
Pray that it is about God’s rule, his power and his majesty. That was an act of defiance in Jesus’ time . Resistance to a dictatorship built on legions, colonialism, exploitation and slavery.
And also in our time this prayer is an act of resistance. Resist the idols. The injustice that they produce, at d e greed-going e lhouders, racism between peoples , against the exploitation of creation . By honoring God, we resist evil. We give ultimate glory to God, and nothing and no one else in creation.
By praying the Our Father, and especially the last line, we live ahead of the facts. It seems here on Earth that it revolves around the kingdom of economic growth, the power of the multinationals, or the glory of our own achievements.
But all that is apparent. We know better. We expect God’s Kingdom. We are already living from his power. We believe that one day the whole earth will be filled with its glory. And that is why we are already going through life as free people. Dancing to the music of God’s New World. Amen.
