De preek over een hoopvolle toekomst

bij Jeremia 29:1-14, sermon in English below

Boven

Hoe gaan we samen verder?

Psalm 137

1Aan de rivieren van Babel,

daar zaten wij treurend

above

Disciples of Jesus, guests with us,

11My plan for you is sure, declares the LORD. I envision your happiness, not your misfortune: I will give you a hopeful future.

We are on our way to a hopeful future.

If you believe that now, you are a very big optimist.

Because there are dark clouds all over our heads.

The climate crisis. There has been a lot of talk about that last week.

The coronavirus. On a global scale, we are still in the midst of a crisis. The vast majority of the world’s population has not been vaccinated, and vaccine sharing is not going well. A new variant could break out at any time that the existing vaccines cannot handle. And then we might go into a lockdown again.

There is a refugee crisis, the inequality between rich and poor has only been increasing for years, there is a housing crisis, a formation crisis. And all those things are interrelated and reinforce each other.

There is a good chance that the younger generations in our church will have it worse than the generations before. And we haven’t experienced that in over a hundred years.

But the good news is: at least things are going better than they were in Jeremiah’s time.

Jeremiah writes a letter to the exiles in Babylon. For decades he prophesied and said in the name of God that this would happen. For the Israelites worshiped idols. And they caused unprecedented injustice. They oppressed the poor, widows, orphans and strangers. The low point was that they started to sacrifice their own children to the idol Moloch. How deep can you sink.

So God withdrew his protective hands from Israel. The Babylonians struck and Jerusalem was conquered. A puppet was installed on the throne of Judah and the upper class of the population was taken as slaves to Babylon.

Among the exiles in  Babel are also optimists. Who see a bright future. Prophets who say: within two years God is going to break the yoke. And we can go home. But Jeremiah distances himself from this exile wappies: the exile will last 70 years. Do not listen to the fake news of these false prophets. This generation will not see Jerusalem again.

But in the midst of that exile, Jeremiah also speaks hopeful words from God.

11My plan for you is sure, declares the LORD. I envision your happiness, not your misfortune: I will give you a hopeful future. 12You will call on me and pray to me, and I will listen to you. 13You will seek me and find me, if you seek me with all your heart and soul.

Even though Israel has severed the connection with God, that does not mean that God will let them go. In Babylon God makes a new beginning with them. They are thousands of miles from the temple, yet God is near.

God hears our cry, our complaint. God hears our prayers, our sighs. If we seek God, He will be found. Let’s seek him together with all our heart, all our soul, and all our mind.

Discussion 1: Seeking and finding God, that happens for me especially in the church service on Sunday morning.

Song PS84a:3,4,5

Inside

4Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, to the exiles whom he sent from Jerusalem to Babylon: 5Build houses and dwell in them, plant gardens and eat of the produce, 6marry and procreate sons and daughters, seek wives for your sons, and marry your daughters, that they may bear sons and daughters. You must increase in number, not decrease.

The exiles in Babel are on a sort of hold. They live in Babylon, but they don’t want to be there. On the banks of the Euphrates they sing sad songs about how much they miss Jerusalem. They are stuck in the past. They have no connection to their new hometown. And their connection with each other consists mainly of mourning about what was and what will not come back in their lives.

The message of Jeremiah is: connect with each other. Come out of your tents and build houses, become neighbours. Plant gardens to get your own food and to rest from your labor. Reconnect with each other and make yourself stronger as a community.

For me it’s about the connection with each other. In the corona time we have put a lot of time and energy into staying connected with each other. Sometimes it worked, sometimes less so. But now there is a new challenge. How do we reconnect? If the 1.5 meters is abolished in a hopefully short time, will the church be full again? What about people who have joined the live stream but who have not come to church before? And have people also dropped out of the church? What about our teens, who have always been concerned about whether the Church is appropriate for them? Have new forms of church been discovered that we should hold onto?

How do we continue together? How do we get that feeling of being family together, of being the Body of Christ again? Or do we have that at still How can the connection increase again instead of decreasing?

Discussion 2: I can believe in God on my own .

Song HH47 family (Psalm 133)

Outside

Try to imagine it. You have been kidnapped from Jerusalem. Thousands of miles away you have to work as a slave for the king of Babylon. Perhaps your children were murdered by the Babylonian soldiers. It is not for nothing that the Israelites on the banks of the Euphrates have composed the most vengeful of all scriptures:

Psalm 137

1By the rivers of Babylon,

there we sat grieving

and remembered Zion.

8Babel, soon you will be destroyed.

Blessed is he who will take revenge

and you do what you did to us.

9Blessed is he who seizes your children

and crushes on the rocks.

It’s a poem. It’s not something they actually did. But they are vengeful cruel words. Feelings that are to be expected in such a situation.

But then. What does God ask of the exiles in Babylon?

7Pray to the LORD for the city to which I have carried you away, and strive for its prosperity, for the prosperity of the city is also your prosperity.

They are instructed to reconnect with God. They are instructed to reconnect with each other. And are ordered to ally with Babylon. To seek the good for the city. shalom. Peace. wholeness. To contribute to the prosperity of the city.

And if that goes for those Jewish exiles who would live there for seventy years in a city that hated them. How much more, then, does it not apply to us in the place where we live?

How can we commit ourselves to flourishing for the place where we are church, Delfgauw, Oude Leede, surroundings?

So first of all pray. Every Sunday evening, Christians from different churches and cultures pray in this building for Delfgauw. In any case, that’s a good start. And in the church services we also try to look for concrete prayer points that touch on our village. We sometimes go on a prayer walk. We have a prayer group for primary school de Triangel. You can also try to build in your prayers that you pray for things that are going on in the environment.

And second, seek peace. Commit to bloom. We are called to search for God. And we are equally called to seek peace for our village.

Why? Because God, Father, Son, and Spirit can also be found outside the church building. The church is where Jesus is. And Jesus is where the good, the beautiful and the true can be found.

God is Creator and saw that it was good. The world is broken, but it is still God’s creation. And God is not going to destroy the world, but to renew it. Everything good that can be found here on earth will find a place in God’s new world.

How do you do that then? Seek peace for your hometown.

Greet everyone you meet on the sidewalk.

Connect with your neighbors. Very logical for the people in old Delfgauw. Quite a challenge for the Vinex residents.

These are the little things we can all do.

It also asks something of us together, as a church. During the preparation I thought that as a minister I have worked on this point in the past 8 years. The connection with outside the church. We are not going to organize all kinds of things ourselves as a church, we don’t have enough manpower for that. But we are in line with what other organizations are organising. Such as the Biesland Dagen, De Verbeelding, the waste pickers of DAPper Delfgauw, the neighborhood party in Oude Leede, neighborhood center De Buren van Delfgauw, Jouw Delfgauw. I have made contacts with district managers, community police officers, social workers and all kinds of others. Precisely because of this point. Because as a church we have the task to search for peace, to make an effort for the prosperity of the village. Because therein lies our flowering as a church.

And seeking peace for our village means inviting others to join in. To follow Jesus too. Because if all goes well, disciples of Jesus are peacemakers. And the village will flourish more if more people follow Jesus.

Now Babylon was full of idols. Violence was the order of the day. There was oppression and slavery. Also in our time all sorts of bad things are happening around us. Just think of drug use in our village. To distribution employees of Albert Heijn at Ruyven who are in no way allowed to profit from Ahold’s corona profit. From plastic waste that blows straight into the puddle from the shopping center. To the economic powers and forces that ensure that scaling up is the only option for horticulturists to survive. To loneliness, anonymity and depression that are also common here.

Praying for the world does not mean that everything in the world is good. We must not be conformed to the world, the Bible says. Our benchmark is the Kingdom of God, the heavenly Jerusalem. But we look for where some of it permeates in the here and now, on this earth. We seek peace and prosperity for our village, without being naive to be concerned about the evil that also happens around us and to which we are also susceptible. We seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness. And help us to search and build where we can already find some of that peace and prosperity here on earth.

Discussion: I like to leave the connection with people outside the church to the pastor.

Song HH399 Together in the name of Jesus
