Leerlingen van Jezus, gasten met ons,
Vandaag gaat het over Maria. Als icoon van genade, en moeder van alle gelovigen. U ziet de afbeelding van het boek Maria icoon van genade, door Arnold Huijgen.
Maria is voor ons een voorbeeld van genade.
28Gabriël ging haar huis binnen en zei: ‘Gegroet Maria, je bent begenadigd, de Heer is met je.’
Arnold Huijgen zegt het zo: Maria is een ikoon van genade. Gods genade schijnt door haar heen. Door naar Maria te kijken, leren we Gods genade voor ons kennen.
Het Evangelie van Jezus Christus begint met Gods genade voor Maria. Zij wordt uitgekozen om de moeder van de Messias te worden.
En dat is heel bijzonder. Juist omdat Maria op het eerste gezicht helemaal geen logische kandidaat is.
Het verhaal begint zo:
26In de zesde maand zond God de engel Gabriël naar de stad Nazaret in Galilea.
Gabriël, de machtige engel, de sterke man van God, wordt uit de hoge hemel gezonden. Niet naar Rome, niet naar Jeruzalem, niet naar het Judea van de Joden, maar naar Galilea, aan de rand van Israël, het gebied waar naast Joden ook veel heidenen woonden. En dan ook nog naar het onbetekenend plaatsje Nazareth. Een dorpje dat in het Oude Testament niet eens wordt genoemd.
Zo’n onbetekenend dorpje als Delfgauw. Voor ik in contact kwam met de kerk hier, 10 jaar geleden, had ik er ook nog nooit van gehoord.
En in dat onbetekenende Nazareth is Maria ook nog iemand met een hele lage status. Ze is een vrouw. Ongetrouwd. Weliswaar verloofd met Jozef uit het geslacht van David. Maar zo lang ze nog niet getrouwd is, stelt ze niet zo veel voor.
En juist dat onbetekenende meisje van een jaar of 15 heeft de allerhoogste God op het oog.
Dat is genade. Dat God liefdevol naar je kijkt. Niet om wat jij hebt gepresteerd, maar gewoon. Omdat Hij van je houdt. Zo kijkt de allerhoogste God naar Maria. Zo kijkt Hij naar jou, naar mij. Als broers en zussen van Maria in Christus, zijn ook wij begenadigd. God houdt van ons. We zijn kostbaar in zijn ogen. Misschien ben jij ook wel een jaar of 15. Misschien denk je ook wel, wat stel ik nou voor. Voor God ben jij waardevol. Laat dat tot je doordringen. De allerhoogste God heeft jou op het oog.
Maar ergens is Maria natuurlijk ook uniek. Ze is een maagd die zwanger wordt. Hoe kant dat? Dat vraagt Maria zich ook af.
35De engel antwoordde: ‘De heilige Geest zal over je komen en de kracht van de Allerhoogste zal je als een schaduw overdekken. Daarom zal het kind dat geboren wordt, heilig worden genoemd en Zoon van God.
De schaduw die Maria overdekt, doet denken aan een beeld uit Exodus. Aan de wolk die het volk Israël begeleide bij de Exodus, de uittocht door de woestijn. Tijdens die reis bouwen ze een tabernakel, een heilige tent. En in die tent komt de heilige God zelf wonen, in de vorm van een wolk. Zoals God woonde in een tent, bij Israël, zo komt God zelf nu in Maria.
Het onmogelijke zit hem niet zozeer in dat een maagd zwanger wordt. Wonderlijke zwangerschappen zijn er eerder geweest in de Bijbel. De oude Sara en Abraham, pas toen ze heel oud waren kregen ze een zoon, zoals God had beloofd. En Hanna de moeder van Samuël kon eerst niet zwanger worden. En het was haar zoon Samuel die David tot koning zalfde.
Het is een refrein uit het Oude Testament: niets is onmogelijk voor God. Juist ook rond die wonderlijke zwangerschappen wanneer God zijn verbond vernieuwd klinkt dat refrein: niets is onmogelijk voor God.
Het eigenlijke onmogelijke zit hem in dat die heilige God, zo dicht bij ons onheilige mensen, komt wonen. Zo dichtbij dat Hij in Maria komt. Dat Jezus geboren wordt als God en mens. Zo dichtbij. Ondanks onze onreinheid en zondigheid. In zijn grote liefde breekt God door die grenzen heen. Niet omdat Maria als maagd zo zuiver is. Maar omdat God haar zo genadig is.
En Maria. Zij staat daar voor open.
38Maria zei: ‘De Heer wil ik dienen: laat er met mij gebeuren wat u hebt gezegd.’
Maria als eerste gelovige. Als eerste persoon op aarde die het Evangelie hoort. Zij gelooft als eerste dat Jezus de Messias geboren zal worden. Dat Hij de Zoon van David is. De Zoon van God. Degene die de troon van Israël zal herstellen. Met wie het Koninkrijk van God zal beginnen. God zelf wordt mens.
En Maria weet heel goed wat dat betekend. Het lied ‘Mary did you know’, ‘Maria wist je wel’ vraagt zich af of Maria wel wist waar ze ja op zei. En nee ze wist niet dat Jezus op het water zou lopen of stormen zou stillen.
Maar als je kijkt naar Maria’s eigen lied weet ze heel goed wat de Messias zal doen. Beter dan de schrijvers van ‘Mary did you know’.
Jezus zou niet alleen mensen redden, mensen genezen en stormen stillen. Hij zal de hele wereld omkeren. Recht maken wat mensen op z’n kop hebben gezet.
Mensen die zichzelf heel wat vinden, zoals keizer Augustus, zal Hij maken tot figuranten in het kerstverhaal.
Grote heersers als Herodes de Grote zullen sidderen van angst bij zijn geboorte. Jezus stoot hen van hun troon. Kleine mensen zoals herders zal Hij verhogen.
Armen zal Hij voeden. Met brood en levend brood. Rijken zullen zich aan hem stoten, zoals een kameel niet door het oog van een naald past.
In Jezus is God genadig voor zijn volk Israël. Opnieuw redt Hij hen uit een slavenbestaan. Uit de slavernij van de zonde. In Jezus hertstelt God het koningschap over Israël. Zoals Hij ooit aan Abraham had beloofd.
En Maria gelooft. Als jong meisje stelt ze zich beschikbaar, als dienares van God. En ten volle beseft ze wat dat betekent als ze haar lied zingt. God gaat alles omkeren. God gaat alles rechtzetten. Zijn genade wordt zichtbaar door Maria heen. Zij is de moeder van de Messias. De eerste die gelooft. De moeder van alle gelovigen.
En dit mensenkind, Jezus Messias, zoon van Maria, Zoon van God, dit kind komt toe alle lof en eer. Amen.

Mary is an example of grace for us.
28Gabriel entered her house and said, “Hail Mary, you are gracious, the Lord is with you.”
Arnold Huijgen puts it this way: Mary is an icon of grace. God’s grace shines through her. By looking at Mary, we come to know God’s grace for us.
The Gospel of Jesus Christ begins with God’s grace to Mary. She is chosen to become the mother of the Messiah.
And that is very special. Precisely because Maria is not a logical candidate at first sight.
The story begins like this:
26In the sixth month God sent the angel Gabriel to the city of Nazareth in Galilee.
Gabriel, the mighty angel, the mighty man of God, is sent from high heaven. Not to Rome, not to Jerusalem, not to the Judea of the Jews, but to Galilee, on the outskirts of Israel, the area where many Gentiles lived alongside Jews. And then also to the insignificant town of Nazareth. A village that is not even mentioned in the Old Testament.
Such an insignificant village as Delfgauw. Before I came into contact with the church here, 10 years ago, I had never heard of it either.
And in that insignificant Nazareth, Mary is also someone with a very low status. She’s a woman. Unmarried. True, betrothed to Joseph of the lineage of David. But as long as she’s not married yet, she’s not that much.
And it is precisely that insignificant girl of about 15 who has the most high God in mind.
That’s grace. May God look at you lovingly. Not because of what you have achieved, but simply. Because He loves you. This is how the Most High God looks at Mary. That’s how He looks at you, at me. As brothers and sisters of Mary in Christ, we too are gifted. God loves us. We are precious in his eyes. Maybe you are also about 15 years old. Maybe you also think, what am I suggesting. You are valuable to God. Let that sink in. The Most High God has your eye on you.
But somehow Mary is of course also unique. She is a virgin who becomes pregnant. How is that? Mary wonders that too.
35 The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will cover you like a shadow. Therefore, the child that is born will be called holy and Son of God.
The shadow covering Mary is reminiscent of an image from Exodus. To the cloud that accompanied the people of Israel during the Exodus, the exodus through the desert. During that journey they build a tabernacle, a holy tent. And in that tent comes to dwell the holy God himself, in the form of a cloud. Just as God lived in a tent with Israel, so God Himself now comes in Mary.
The impossible is not so much about a virgin getting pregnant. Miraculous pregnancies have happened before in the Bible. Old Sarah and Abraham, it wasn’t until they were very old that they had a son, as God had promised. And Hannah the mother of Samuel could not conceive at first. And it was her son Samuel who anointed David king.
It is a refrain from the Old Testament: nothing is impossible for God. Especially around those miraculous pregnancies when God renews his covenant, that refrain sounds: nothing is impossible for God.
The actual impossible lies in the fact that that holy God comes to live so close to us unholy people. So close that He comes in Mary. That Jesus is born as God and man. So close. Despite our uncleanness and sinfulness. In his great love, God breaks through those boundaries. Not because Mary as a virgin is so pure. But because God is so gracious to her.
And Mary. She is open to that.
38Mary said, “I will serve the Lord. Let what you have said be done to me.”
Mary as the first believer. As the first person on earth to hear the Gospel. She is the first to believe that Jesus the Messiah will be born. That He is the Son of David. The Son of God. The one who will restore the throne of Israel. With whom the Kingdom of God will begin. God himself becomes man.
And Maria knows very well what that means. The song ‘Mary did you know’, ‘Maria did you know’ wonders if Maria knew what she said yes to. And no, she didn’t know that Jesus would walk on water or calm storms.
But if you look at Mary’s own song, she knows very well what the Messiah will do. Better than the writers of Mary did you know.
Jesus would not only save people, heal people and calm storms. He will turn the whole world around. Making right what people have turned upside down.
He will make people who think themselves very good, like Emperor Augustus, into extras in the Christmas story.
Great rulers like Herod the Great will tremble with fear at his birth. Jesus knocks them off their throne. Little people like shepherds He will exalt.
The poor He will feed. With bread and living bread. The rich will stumble upon him, as a camel cannot fit through the eye of a needle.
In Jesus, God is merciful to his people Israel. Again He rescues them from a slavery. From the slavery of sin. In Jesus, God restores the kingdom over Israel. As He once promised to Abraham.
And Mary believes. As a young girl she makes herself available, as a servant of God. And she fully realizes what that means when she sings her song. God is going to turn everything around. God is going to set everything right. His grace becomes visible through Mary. She is the mother of the Messiah. The first to believe. The mother of all believers.
And to this child of man, Jesus Messiah, son of Mary, Son of God, to this child be all praise and honor. Amen.
