Leerlingen van Jezus, gasten met ons,
Jezus zegt dat Hij vrede geeft. Een vrede die de wereld ons niet kan geven. Maar wat is dat eigenlijk vrede? Dat wilde ik nou net aan jullie vragen.

Vrede is dus meer dan alleen geen oorlog. Of rust. Vrede is heelheid. Compleet zijn. Jezus zegt: ik geef jullie vrede. Dat betekent dus dat Jezus on heelheid of compleetheid geeft.
En dat is Gods grote plan met met jou en mij, met ons als kerk, met de hele wereld en de hele schepping:

19God zelf wilde aanwezig zijn in Christus. 20Want hij wilde via zijn Zoon vrede brengen tussen de schepping en zichzelf. Hij liet hem voor ons sterven aan het kruis. Daardoor is het nu weer goed tussen God en iedereen op aarde en in de hemel.
Bij het woord vrede zitten we bij de kern van het Christelijk geloof. Waarom Jezus op weg moest gaan naar Jeruzalem. Jezus moet sterven aan het kruis, opstaan uit de dood, naar de hemel gaan, en zijn Heilige Geest naar ons sturen. Om vrede te brengen. Heelheid. Compleetheid.
En tegenover die vrede van God, die heelheid, compleetheid, plaatst Jezus de vrede van de wereld. Want de wereld belooft ook vrede, maar geeft geen vrede maar nepvrede, verdoving.
Vrede werkt op drie niveaus: vrede van God voor jou, vrede met elkaar en vrede voor de schepping.
De vrede van God voor jou. Door Jezus is het goed tussen God en jou. Je zonden worden vergeven. Je mag bij God horen. Hij is erbij. Hij geeft je rust. Ook in moeilijke tijden. Ook als je je alleen voelt. Als je ziek bent. God is erbij. De Heilige Geest is de Helper, de Trooster. Dwars door alles heen. De Heilige Geest helpt je om je leven heel te maken. In de gebrokenheid te groeien in het volgen van Jezus.
Verdoving voor jou. Dat betekent doen alsof God niet bestaat. Dan kun je ook niet zondig staan tegenover God. Dan moet iedereen zelf bepalen wat goed en kwaad is. En als er lijden in je leven komt. Dan is dat karma, je lot. Of gewoon pech. Er is niemand bij je, je moet er alleen doorheen. Het lijden heeft geen zin.
En er is vrede met elkaar. Jezus zegt: 15Als je mij liefhebt, houd je dan aan mijn geboden. En Jezus gebod is: houd van elkaar. Maak het weer goed met elkaar. Ook als je ruzie heb. Ook als je heel anders bent. Sticht vrede tussen mensen, buren, volken. De kerk is de plek waar we dat oefenen. Vergeef ons onze schulden, gelijk ook wij vergeven onze schuldenaren.
Verdoving naar elkaar. Dat is als iemand jou iets aandoet, dan sla je terug. Of dan wil je die persoon nooit meer zien. Het is elkaar beledigen, boos reageren, het zijn de dingen die je veel ziet gebeuren op de sociale media.
Ik merk het bijvoorbeeld bij de coronamaatregelen die we als kerk zelf moeten bepalen. Dat is altijd lastig. Wat is nou wijsheid?
Er zijn mensen die sneller dingen willen versoepelen. Omdat we elkaar moeten kunnen ontmoeten. En mensen die de regels streng willen houden, voor de veiligheid.
En voor je het weet heb je daar ruzie over. Het raakt ook aan wat voor ons belangrijk is. Voor de een is dat vooral naar de kerk gaan, voor de ander zingen, voor de andere de gemeentegroeigroep. En daar samen uitkomen. Dat kan alleen als je de ander blijft zien als broer of zus. Als je weet dat God ons in vrede aan elkaar gegeven heeft. En dat God vrede belangrijk vindt.
En het is vrede met de schepping. De aarde niet gebruiken, maar genieten. Eerlijk delen met elkaar. Zorgen voor de schepping. Goed omgaan met wat God aan ons heeft toevertrouwt.
Verdoving naar de schepping. Dat is doen alsof de aarde niet opwarmt. Je verantwoordelijkheid doorschuiven naar andere mensen, andere landen, andere organisaties, andere generaties. Doen alsof je neus bloed.
En zoals jullie weten gaat het niet goed met de vrede tussen ons en de schepping. De aarde warmt op door co2, er is te veel stikstof, te veel gif, met elke storm waait het plastic door onze straten. Daarom doen we als kerk vandaag ook mee aan het klimaatalarm. Om 15:00 uur vanmiddag luiden we de noodklok voor het klimaat. We roepen elkaar op beter voor de schepping te zorgen. En dat ook mee te nemen in het stemhokje. Neem vrede tussen ons en de schepping serieus als je deze week gaat stemmen.
Vrede van God. Sjaloom, Irene. Voor jou, voor elkaar, voor de schepping. Heelheid, compleetheid. Het is een grote uitdaging. Maar het begint met wat Jezus voor ons heeft gedaan. Zijn vrede geeft Hij aan ons. En Hij bemoedigt ons met deze woorden.
27Ik laat jullie vrede na; mijn vrede geef ik jullie, zoals de wereld die niet geven kan. Maak je niet ongerust en verlies de moed niet.

So peace is more than just no war. Or rest. Peace is wholeness. Be complete. Jesus says: I give you peace. That means that Jesus gives unwhole or completeness.
And that is God’s great plan with you and me, with us as a church, with the whole world and all creation:
Colossians 1
19God Himself wanted to be present in Christ. 20For he wanted to bring peace between creation and himself through his Son. He let him die for us on the cross. As a result, it is now good again between God and everyone on earth and in heaven.
With the word peace we are at the heart of the Christian faith. Why Jesus had to go to Jerusalem. Jesus must die on the cross, rise from the dead, go to heaven, and send His Holy Spirit to us. To bring peace. Wholeness. Completeness.
And against that peace of God, that wholeness, completeness, Jesus places the peace of the world. Because the world also promises peace, but does not give peace but fake peace, anesthesia.
Peace works on three levels: peace from God for you, peace with each other and peace for creation.
The peace of God for you. Because of Jesus it is good between God and you. Your sins are forgiven. You can belong to God. He’s there. He gives you peace of mind. Even in difficult times. Even if you feel alone. When you are ill. God is there. The Holy Spirit is the Helper, the Comforter. Right through everything. The Holy Ghost helps you to make your life whole. To grow in brokenness in following Jesus.
Anesthetic for you. That means pretending that God does not exist. Then you cannot be sinful towards God. Then everyone has to decide for themselves what is right and wrong. And when suffering comes into your life. Then that is karma, your destiny. Or just bad luck. There is no one with you, you just have to go through it. There is no point in suffering.
And there is peace with each other. Jesus says: 15 If you love me, keep my commandments. And Jesus command is: love one another. Make amends with each other. Even if you have a fight. Even if you are very different. Establish peace between people, neighbors, nations. The church is where we practice that. Forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
Anesthesia to each other. That’s if someone does something to you, then you hit back. Or then you never want to see that person again. It is insulting each other, reacting angrily, these are the things you see a lot happening on social media.
I notice it, for example, in the corona measures that we as a church must determine ourselves. That is always difficult. What is wisdom?
There are people who want to relax things faster. Because we need to be able to meet. And people who want to keep the rules strict, for safety.
And before you know it, you are arguing about that. It also touches on what is important to us. For some it is mainly going to church, singing for others, for others the church growth group. And get there together. That is only possible if you continue to see the other as a brother or sister. When you know that God has given us to each other in peace. And that God cares about peace.
And it is peace with creation. Don’t use the earth, enjoy it. Share honestly with each other. Taking care of creation. Dealing well with what God has entrusted to us.
Anesthesia to creation. That is pretending that the earth is not warming. Passing on your responsibility to other people, other countries, other organizations, other generations. Pretend your nose is bleeding.
And as you know, peace between us and creation is not going well. The earth is heating up because of CO2, there is too much nitrogen, too much poison, with every storm the plastic blows through our streets. That is why we as a church are also participating in the climate alarm today. At 3 p.m. this afternoon we sound the alarm for the climate. We call on each other to take better care of creation. And to include that in the voting booth. Take peace between us and creation seriously when you vote this week.
Peace of God. Shalom, Irene. For you, for each other, for creation. Wholeness, completeness. It’s a big challenge. But it starts with what Jesus has done for us. He gives His peace to us. And He encourages us with these words.
27I leave you peace; my peace I give to you, as the world cannot give it. Don’t worry or lose heart.
