sermon in English below

We beginnen achteraan.

Gods schepping was vrijwel verloren.

Terroristen.

(BGT 2014)

We ontmoeten Jezus in Getsemané.

Amen.

Disciples of Jesus, guests with us,

And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. (NBG 1951)

And do not bring us into trial, but deliver us from the clutches of evil. (NBV 2004)

Help us never choose against you. And protect us from the power of evil. (BGT 2014)

This prayer consists of two parts, they explain each other and keep each other in balance.

We start at the back. By “evil”, or in another translation “the evil one”.

If you translate “evil”, you quickly look at what we ourselves are doing wrong. Our sins. And to the things that are wrong in our society. Deliver us from evil. That is then deliver us from injustice, climate change, from corona. Of the evil tendencies in ourselves.

When you translate “the evil one”, you are looking at the face behind the evil: the evil one. From the Bible this face has all kinds of names: the devil, Satan, the ruler of this world, the serpent, the dragon, the roaring lion, he who is evil itself, the first of the powers and powers. A real opponent of the Good Cause of God.

But, then I come again with the lesson of CS Lewis

“You can give too little or too much attention to the devil”

The devil is real, but you shouldn’t make him too big. He has no chance against God. God is the creator, the artist. The devil can only destroy, lie, anti-creation is his only art. So the bad one, but really without a capital letter. It is about a person-like being, no more than that. An adversary to contend with in prayer. But you shouldn’t give him too much attention, not even in your prayer. Focus on the good and thank God for the good there is. That works better than focusing entirely on the evil one.

Even in Jesus’ day, people had different views of evil.

You had the Sadducees. The spiritual leaders, who worked together with the Romans. They thought it was not so bad with evil. It’s not going that bad. So they didn’t need a solution to evil either.

You had the Essenes: in their view the world was overwhelmed by evil. God’s creation was virtually lost. Their solution to evil: They retreated into the desert to start a new pure community, calling themselves the children of light, and all other people the children of darkness.

You had the Pharisees. They thought evil was real. But the evil was mainly in the other people. Think of that Pharisee who presents Jesus in the temple:

Luke 18:11

The Pharisee stood up there and prayed to himself, “God, I thank you that I am not like other people who are rapacious or unrighteous or adulterous, nor am I like that tax collector.

The solution to evil, according to the Pharisees: everyone had to obey strict rules. Living at home as pure and holy as if you were in the temple.

There were also zealots, freedom fighters. Terrorists. According to them, the foreigners, the Romans were evil. Their solution: a revolt against the Romans, assassinations. Think of the criminals who were crucified with Jesus.

And there was the way of Jesus. How did He feel about evil? Of these four group, Jesus was closest to the Pharisees. Jesus also believed that evil is in the people themselves and he thought that evil was very real. But his solution was much more radical than the Pharisees’ solution.

Which brings us to the first part of the prayer:

And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. (NBG 1951)

And do not bring us into trial, but deliver us from the clutches of evil. (NBV 2004)

Help us never choose against you. And protect us from the power of evil. (BGT 2014)

We meet Jesus in Gethsemane. There he confronts evil.

Jesus pray.

42 “Father, if you wish, take this cup away from me. But don’t let what I want, but what you want to happen. “

And Jesus is being tested.

44He was overcome with agony, but kept praying; his sweat fell to the ground like blood in large drops.

The trial that Jesus must endure is to be obedient to God. Be true to God’s plan. God’s plan is for Jesus to empty the cup of evil. That He is arrested, innocent condemned, spat and mocked, tortured, crucified. That He’s going to die. And with that when the innocent takes the place of the guilty. With that the evil one defies and takes its power. Jesus must take on evil.

The trial of Jesus is not the first trial in the Bible. Ever since creation, God has challenged people to live with Him. To take care of creation as an image of God. But the evil one tempts that challenge. He tempts people to choose evil and leave good.

Israel is tested in the desert exodus. And again and again they disappoint God. They keep complaining about water and food. They want to go back to slavery in Egypt. They fail to trust in God and endure the trial. Time and again Israel falls to the temptations of the evil one. God hands them over to their own choices. And they are defeated by Babylon, and end up in captivity. They return to the promised land. But it keeps muddling on. If God has anything more to do with His people, He will have to intervene Himself.

Then Jesus comes. At the start of his mission, Jesus is tested in the desert. After 40 days without food, Satan comes three times with a tempting offer. But Jesus remains faithful to God and endures the trial.

During his mission, Jesus faces disease, poverty, demons, exclusion, the devil, death. He encounters all forms of evil. And where Jesus appears evil flees. The sick are healed, the poor are taken into a community that shares, demons are expelled, people are allowed to participate again in the circle around Jesus, the devil is defeated, the dead come back to life. The dark of the evil one is dispelled by the light that is Jesus.

But He encounters all those forms of evil again here in Gethsemane.

He has to empty a cup. The cup of God’s wrath. A cup in which all evil comes together. Jesus is going to drink this cup by being innocent condemned, by being tortured, mocked, crucified, by dying. When evil falls on his shoulders. He must bear all that evil in desolation. God abandonment. Hell.

The trial that Jesus sees before him is so great that He prays to be allowed to avoid this trial.

42 “Father, if you wish, take this cup away from me. But don’t let what I want, but what you want to happen. “

Inevitably, we too will be tested. God challenges us to live with him. The evil one tempts us to avoid that challenge. He turns the trial into a temptation. And when we pray, lead us not into temptation, but deliver from the evil one. Then we pray: God help us to endure trials. Do not help us by removing trials from our path. But by helping us choose You in the trial.

In this sense, the Common Language Bible has translated this prayer very well:

Help us never choose against you. And protect us from the power of evil. (BGT 2014)

Jesus prayed to be allowed to avoid the trial. But the Father’s answer was no. You must drink this cup. You have to go through this ordeal.

And Jesus continues. He resists the temptation of the devil. Even on the cross He is tempted: come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God? But Jesus remains true to God’s plan. He dies for the Good Cause. For God’s Kingdom.

Jesus has taken on evil. He has defeated evil. In His suffering, death and resurrection. And with that He has redeemed us from evil. So that we can survive when we are tested.

In this prayer, we pray that God will assist us in this way. That He helps us to be faithful to Him over and over again.

Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Amen.
