Leerlingen van Jezus, gasten in ons midden,
Wat vieren we nou precies met Hemelvaartsdag? Van de vier grote christelijke feesten, Kerst, Pasen, Hemelvaart en Pinksteren en is Hemelvaart toch het meest ingewikkeld. Jezus verlaat ons. Maar waarom is dat een reden voor een feest?
Natuurlijk, met Pinksteren komt de geest, dus doordat Jezus ons verlaat, kan God juist heel dichtbij ons komen. In ons komen wonen. Hemelvaart maakt Pinksteren mogelijk. Maar Hemelvaart is ook een feest op zichzelf. Het is niet een noodzakelijk kwaad.
In het verhaal van Jezus’ Hemelvaart zie je dat de leerlingen het ook niet helemaal snappen.
6Zij die daar bijeen waren, vroegen Hem: ‘Heer, gaat U dan binnen afzienbare tijd het koningschap over Israël herstellen?’
En Jezus geeft dan een wat ontwijkend antwoord:
7‘Het is niet aan jullie om te weten wat de Vader in zijn macht heeft vastgesteld over de tijd en het ogenblik waarop deze gebeurtenissen zullen plaatsvinden.
En als Jezus dan naar de hemel gaat, blijven ze met open mond naar de hemel staren. De engelen moeten hen uit de verdoving wakker maken:
11 ‘Galileeërs, wat staan jullie naar de hemel te kijken? Deze Jezus, die uit jullie midden in de hemel is opgenomen, zal op dezelfde wijze terugkomen als jullie Hem naar de hemel hebben zien gaan.’
En als je zo naar boven kijkt, dan is het lastig om blij te zijn. Daarom schakelen we gelijk over naar de camera van Daniël. Want Daniël heeft in zijn visioen gezien hoe dit verder gaat.
De mensenzoon komt op een wolk in de hemel. Hij neemt plaats aan de rechterhand van God, op een troon. En zijn heerschappij zal nooit ten einde komen.
De hemel kun je vergelijken met de controlekamer van vliegveld Rotterdam-The Hague. Die je kunt zien als je door Oude Leede fietst. Als je op het vliegveld loopt, heb je niet door wat er in de controlekamer gebeurt. Maar in grote lijnen wordt het hele vliegveld vanuit die controlekamer bestuurd. Het is niet zo dat elke stap van elke persoon daarvandaan wordt bepaald. Maar de controlekamer zorgt ervoor dat het vliegveld functioneert en de vliegtuigen kunnen landen en opstijgen en de passagiers hun doel kunnen bereiken.
Met zijn Hemelvaart neemt Jezus zitting in de controlekamer. Hij regeert over de hele wereld. Zijn regering is vaak niet zichtbaar. Maar wie beter weet, ziet dat niets op de aarde los staat van de hemel.
Psalm 47 vertelt ons wat dat betekent, als Jezus de koning is. Ik denk dat we er vier dingen uit kunnen leren.
Jezus neemt plaats op de troon in de hemel, en is daarmee de koning van de hele aarde. Dat wil zeggen. Niemand anders. Dus niet wij zijn de koning van de aarde. Niet het geld, de grote bedrijven, niet de machthebbers. Geen andere machten en krachten. Het dat maakt dat wij helemaal anders moeten kijken naar de wereld. Het is niet het bezit van mensen. De aarde is van God.
En als Jezus de koning is van de wereld, dan zijn wij zijn dienaren. De erewacht, de edelen die voor hem op wacht staan. De koning regeert door zijn edelen heen: God regeert door de mensen die hem willen dienen, zijn discipelen. Het is niet alleen onze taak om geen bende te maken van deze aarde, maar om deze aarde te regeren in naam van de koning. Niet als machthebbers en niet door geweld en dwang. Maar door te dienen. Door lief te hebben. Door onszelf te verliezen en te leven in dienst van de koning.
Een derde is dat als Jezus de koning is van de hele aarde, Hij ook de koning is van alle volken. Het geloof in koning Jezus verbindt ons met christenen van alle volken en alle plaatsen. Ook met mensen uit andere volken die hier komen wonen. Eigen volk eerst is voor christenen geen optie. In september komen er 40 Oekraïense vluchtelingen wonen in Delfgauw. Het zou heel mooi zijn voor hen en voor ons, als zij hier in deze gemeenschap en kerk hun plekje kunnen vinden. Dat we samen met hen op wacht kunnen staan voor onze Heer en koning.
En ten vierde. Als Jezus koning is, is Hij onze lof waard. Het woord wat zo’n beetje het meest voorkomt in Psalm 47 is het woord ‘zing’. Zing voor God. Jezus is koning. Hij is onze lof waard. Wij zingen Hem de eer toe omdat Hem die eer toekomt. En terwijl we dat doen, worden wij gevormd tot zijn edelen. Zijn dienaren. Zijn discipelen. Zijn volk. Het volk van de Heer die is opgevaren ten hemel. En Hem verwacht, want Hij komt terug zoals Hij is heengegaan. En dan mogen wij Hem binnenhalen als koning. En laten zien wat wij met zijn koninkrijk hebben gedaan. Amen.

What exactly do we celebrate with Ascension Day? Of the four great Christian festivals, Christmas, Easter, Ascension and Pentecost, Ascension is the most complicated. Jesus leaves us. But why is that a cause for celebration?
Of course, at Pentecost the spirit comes, so because Jesus leaves us, God can actually come very close to us. Come to live in us. Ascension makes Pentecost possible. But Ascension Day is also a celebration in itself. It’s not a necessary evil.
In the story of Jesus’ Ascension to Ascension, you see that the disciples don’t quite get it either.
6Then those who were gathered there asked Him, “Lord, are You going to restore the kingdom to Israel in no time?”
And Jesus then gives a somewhat evasive answer:
7“It is not for you to know what the Father in his power has decreed as to the time and moment when these events will take place.
And when Jesus goes to heaven, they continue to stare at heaven with their mouths open. The angels must awaken them from the stupor:
11 Galileans, why do you stand gazing at heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come again in the same way as you saw Him go into heaven.”
And when you look up like that, it’s hard to be happy. That’s why we immediately switch to Daniel’s camera. For Daniel has seen in his vision how this goes on.
The Son of Man comes on a cloud in heaven. He sits at the right hand of God, on a throne. And his reign will never end.
The sky can be compared to the control room of Rotterdam-The Hague airport. Which you can see when you cycle through Oude Leede. When you walk through the airport, you don’t realize what’s happening in the control room. But broadly speaking, the entire airport is controlled from that control room. It is not that every step of every person is determined from there. But the control room ensures that the airport is functioning and the planes can land and take off and the passengers can reach their destination.
With his Ascension, Jesus takes a seat in the control room. He rules all over the world. His reign is often not visible. But who knows better, sees that nothing on earth is separate from heaven.
Psalm 47 tells us what that means, when Jesus is the king. I think we can learn four things from it.
Jesus takes his seat on the throne in heaven, and is thus the king of all the earth. Which means. No one else. So not we are the king of the earth. Not the money, the big companies, not the rulers. No other powers and forces. This means that we have to look at the world completely differently. It is not owned by humans. The earth belongs to God.
And if Jesus is the king of the world, then we are his servants. The guard of honour, the nobles who stand guard before him. The king rules through his nobles: God rules through the people who want to serve him, his disciples. Our job is not only not to make a mess of this earth, but to rule this earth in the name of the king. Not as those in power and not by force and coercion. But by serving. By loving. By losing ourselves and living in the service of the king.
A third is that if Jesus is the king of all the earth, He is also the king of all nations. Faith in King Jesus connects us with Christians of all nations and all places. Also with people from other nations who come to live here. Own people first is not an option for Christians. In September, 40 Ukrainian refugees will come to live in Delfgauw. It would be great for them and for us if they could find their place here in this community and church. That we can stand guard with them before our Lord and King.
And fourth. If Jesus is king, He is worthy of our praise. The word that appears most often in Psalm 47 is the word ‘sing’. Sing to God. Jesus is king. He is worthy of our praise. We give Him the glory because Him is due the credit. And as we do that, we are formed into his nobles. His servants. His disciples. His people. The people of the Lord who have ascended into heaven. And wait for Him, for He will return as He went. And then we may bring Him in as king. And show what we have done with his kingdom. Amen.
